On iOS 27, open Settings > Sounds & Haptics, turn off Match Ringtone Volume under Alarms and Timers, and drag the alarm slider. On iOS 26 and earlier, alarms play at your Ringtone and Alerts volume, so that's the slider to turn up.
Until iOS 27, your alarm, ringtone and notifications all shared one volume. Turning the ringer down for a quiet evening also made the next morning's alarm quieter. iOS 27, released in September 2026, finally separates them.
How to Change Alarm Volume on iOS 27
- Open Settings and tap Sounds & Haptics.
- Under Alarms and Timers, turn off Match Ringtone Volume.
- Drag the alarm slider that appears to the volume you want.
Your ringer can now stay quiet while your alarm stays loud. Two things to know:
- The slider covers alarms and timers together, so a kitchen timer rings at the same volume as your morning alarm.
- It doesn't cover the Wake Up alarm from your sleep schedule, which has its own volume (see below).
How to Change Alarm Volume on iOS 26 and Earlier
- Open Settings and tap Sounds & Haptics.
- Drag the Ringtone and Alerts slider. Your alarm plays at this volume.
- Turn off Change with Buttons, so pressing the side buttons during the day can't turn your alarm down by accident.
On these versions there's no way to make the alarm louder than your ringer, so if you keep your ringer low, your alarm will be low too.
How to Change the Wake Up Alarm Volume
If you use a sleep schedule, its Wake Up alarm has its own volume, separate from your other alarms.
- Open the Clock app and tap the Alarm tab.
- Next to Sleep | Wake Up at the top, tap Change.
- Under Alarm Options, make sure the alarm is on and drag the volume slider.
You can also reach the same settings from the Health app, under Sleep.
Why Your Alarm Gets Quieter After a Few Seconds
On iPhones with Face ID, Attention Aware Features lowers the alarm as soon as the phone sees you looking at it. If your alarm starts loud and then drops, this is the likely cause.
- Open Settings and tap Face ID & Passcode.
- Turn off Attention Aware Features.
On some iOS versions, the same switch is under Settings > Accessibility > Face ID & Attention.
Can You Make an iPhone Alarm Louder Than the Maximum?
No, but you can make the most of it:
- Use a built-in sound, not a song. Songs can start quietly, and streamed songs that aren't downloaded to your iPhone won't play at all. Our guide on how to change the alarm sound on iPhone shows every option.
- Keep the phone out from under your pillow and away from soft surfaces that muffle the speaker.
- Set a second alarm a few minutes after the first, in case you sleep through the first one.

Loud Enough, but You Still Sleep Through It?
Then volume isn't the problem. An alarm that makes you do something before it stops works better for heavy sleepers.
FixSleep uses Apple's AlarmKit on iOS 26 and later, the same system as the built-in Clock app, so its alarms ring in Silent mode and during a Focus. To turn the alarm off, you complete a mission: solve math problems, scan a QR code in another room, walk a number of steps or do push-ups counted by the camera. There are 20 alarm sounds to choose from, including a siren.
See how it compares with other apps in our list of the best alarm apps for heavy sleepers.
